Foreign Eyes Spokane Through A New Lens

  • Who remembers their teen years in Spokane? I was one of those kids who loved home, loved our town, and planned to live here forever. (Okay, kind of a mama's girl.)However, when you live in a city so long, you can forget how great that city is.This week we have had a chance to see Spokane through the eyes of Maya, our Japanese student/friend who lived with us while attending EWU. Her visa is nearly up, and even though since graduation she has lived in Hawaii, a place we think of as paradise on earth, she felt the need to, once again, visit Spokane before she returns to Japan.

  •  She wants to walk by the river to see our amazing waterfall. (You know, the one that is right in the heart of downtown? Seriously, how many cities have such a thing?) She wants to drive up to the fruit and vegetable farms in the foothills of Mount Spokane and pick fresh peaches right off the trees, then head south to see the view from High Drive, the street that defines the edge of the South Hill. This morning, she even got up early (a minor miracle in itself) to buy us maple bars from The Donut Parade before they were sold out. (Get this. The donut shops of Hawaii don't even know what a maple bar is!)

  • Maya plans to shop at our malls because the prices here are so much better than in either Hawaii or Japan, and because she is tall and can actually find her size here. When she told us last night, that after the monotony of "paradise," she especially appreciates Spokane's four, distinct seasons, I thought, I can see how that would be true, and I replied, "Thanks, Maya, for reminding us what a remarkable place Spokane really is!" Below is an amazing video of our lovely city Titled Spokane Mini, this video makes me smile.
