So what’s so special about South Perry Pizza on South Hill Spokane? History, atmosphere, craft beers, artisan pizza & salads …take your pick.
Favorably located in the South Perry historic district, South Perry Pizza has an interesting history. The building was constructed in the early fifties and was originally a mechanics shop. Some of the neighborhood old timers say theyremember it operating as a service station into the sixties. At some point it became a Laundromat and operated in this capacity for many years. Then it became a shop and office for a building contractor. In 2008, the building began its transformation into a restaurant. It was newly renovated and opened its doors in December 2009. Its unique front bay doors create an open dining experience which includes and inside or outside patio dining experience. A big plus for dog lovers like me is that it is dog friendly on the patio and accommodates those who hate leaving their pooch at home. Sometimes they’ll even have some one-piece entertainment on the patio.
The quality craft-brews are rotated in each month. I’ve been known to start an enjoyable evening with a cold beer, only after getting a taster or two to see what suits my fancy that day. Good conversation and a cold beer is the prelude to a great time at Perry’s. They only have 6 tap handles so careful beer selection is important. They rotate all of the tap handles; some places with more handles will keep a few permanent beers on tap. They focus on craft beers mostly from the northwest. However, there are some really excellent beers outside of the northwest region that aren’t excluded simply because they aren't northwest. The most important factor is the quality of the beer. They like to keep a stout, two IPAs, a pale ale, a pilsner or lager, and then something different like a nut brown on tap at all times. They strive to serve the finest beers they can find in each of these categories. Additionally, they have a full selection of wines to choose from.
Next comes the tasty individual salads which include Greens, Caesar, Greek, and Bleu. Hey it’s not only me, everyone I’ve treated to dine with me have been pleasantly surprised with the salads. Although I find each of these salads very appetizing, I often gravitate towards the Bleu which is made with a fresh spring mix, candied walnuts, blue cheese crumbles, red onions, grapes, and blue cheese vinaigrette.
Artisan pizza is what you get at Perrys. They strive to be a great neighborhood restaurant and like to mix up pizzas and salads with traditional Italian flavor profiles and some creative "west coast" profiles. So you'll see everything from a simple pepperoni pie to a Chicken Salsa Verde pie. If you like building your own pizza, you have that option as well. Perrys has a very creative kitchen staff so new ideas are never hard to come by. Once they have a general idea for a new pizza, they usually make dozens of variation to get the flavors just right before it makes it onto the menu. For the owner John Siok, that means eating a lot of experimental pizza, which he doesn’t mind.
